Emergency Alert!

Cold Weather Shelter Seamans 2015.jpg

Cold Weather Shelter will be Open at Seamans' Lodge

It looks like we are going to have several days of very cold and possibly wet weather coming in this Friday through January 1st. This will again be a challenge for Sierra Roots to open the Cold Weather Shelter for so many days in a row. We are ready to pull this together if we can get as much help as possible. Yes, its Christmas and New Year's time, so many will be out of town or at family gatherings, but somehow can we come together to do this for our people who have no family to go to and no home to go to?

Can you help?

We'll need overnight people - two shifts,  9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.  and 2:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.   If any of you are willing, let Janice O'Brien know which nights and what shift. Her phone numbers are: 263-2058 or 265-5403. Janice will then put together the Master List and let Mark Prestwich, Nevada City Planning Department, and 211 know when we'll open; most likely it will be Saturday night, Christmas Eve, Christmas night, and on through until January 1st.

We need a team to get food for dinners, snacks through the night, juices, milk, and breakfasts with treats ( soft fruit, cookies, small bags of chips, soft finger food.

We have games, but could use more decks of cards.  And good magazines like National Geographic or others and newspapers would be good to have too. If anyone can set up a movie projector with a couple of interesting movies, that would be very good. We would like some good music too... something to lift the spirits and soothe the soul.

We have identified several of the homeless folks who can be assigned duties and who are more than willing to help set up and clean up. They feel very comfortable at Seaman's Lodge and know how to set it up when they come in.  So, I think it can be a very comfortable and warm place for all of us if we can get the help we'll need.

Streicher House will be open during the days Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM.
